Job summary

We are looking for conscientious plant operators to safely operate plant machinery, such as excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks and mobile elevated platforms, used on civil engineering projects and railway construction sites.

Role and responsibilities

• Operate excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks and mobile elevated platforms at various sites throughout the UK
• Carry out pre-start checks to identify any mechanical and safety issues and complete the machine’s defect book
• Check buckets and other attachments prior to mounting or changing as required, ensuring all certificates are in date
• Arrange and assist with collection of plant machinery from site requiring maintenance and servicing
• Perform simple servicing on the machine and equipment, reporting any major faults
• Basic understanding of vehicle mechanics
• Carry all required documentation, such as competency cards, at all times
• Report any accidents and incidents as soon as possible in compliance with the company’s accident reporting procedure

Qualifications and education requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but any relevant competence cards, and qualifications, for example under the Construction Plant Competence Scheme would be desirable.

• Sustained concentration for long periods
• Good communication skills, such as the provision of machine technical advice to clients when needed.
• Adaptable, able to cope with a change of plans and can work at weekends
• Conduct of duties in a safe, professional and polite manner, seeking assistance as and when required
• Ability to follow detailed instructions, and complete documentation on time and accurately
• Awareness of health and safety issues and safe working practices
• Good teamwork skills and the ability to work alone

Additional notes

• A full valid driving licence is essential
• A reasonable level of fitness will be required due climbing in and out of cabs and some tasks will be at height
• Time spent away from home may be required from time to time at the company’s discretion
• Employment will be subject to a medical screen
• Plant operation takes place in the open air at any time of year, this will involve exposure to the elements
